About High Altitude Kids Club

Thank you for your interest and participation in High Altitude Fitness’ After School Kids Club!

In order to provide a more nurturing, fine-tuned learning environment for our increasing enrollment, our current sessions will offer a smaller student-instructor ratio in classes of 8 children or less. We will also be providing different classes designed for differing experience and ability levels.
Each session includes a month-long membership; children can come climb in the gym outside club times to climb, provided they have adult supervision.

Our kids club is an ongoing monthly program. If your child is interested and you plan on signing up for additional sessions, look into our Kids Club EFT membership for discounted monthly rates.

Kids programming will be organized as follows:

Junior Climbing Club (ages 5 – 7)
Climbing Club (ages 7-10)
Junior Club and Climbing Club each meet once a week, a total of four times a month. These are times for younger children in their appropriate age groups to receive supervised climbing time, including fun and engaging games and climbing-focused activities. Transportation from Incline Elementary to High Altitude can be provided, depending on the day, by school staff or H.A.F. staff.

Intermediate Club (general ages 8-12)
Advanced Club (general ages 10-16)
As climbers in the Junior Club and Club progress in skill, demonstrate they have learned the basic skills of indoor climbing and display a degree of dedication to the sport of rock climbing, they can move up into our upper tier of programs. Children as well as parents, should understand that the Intermediate and Advanced clubs are practice sessions focused on learning skills and skill set progression; classes involve less climbing time and more instruction-based interaction.
These clubs will meet twice a week, and kids will have the benefit of their own H.A.F. membership for the time they are enrolled.

Private Instruction
For the the children who need one-on-one time to work through a specific issue or for those wanting to learn how to push their ability limits, private, one hour long sessions can be the key to hone technique and movement. Contact H.A.F. to set a time and date.

Kids Club EFT Membership
If your child plans on participating in our programs month after month, the Kids Club EFT (Electronic Funds Transfer) membership is perfect for you. Your little climber will have all the benefits of normal enrollment at a discounted, reoccurring, rate (two month commitment).

Thank you for being apart of our ever-growing Kids Club! Please visit us at the gym to sign up! Questions? Email climb@highaltitudefit.net

See you on the wall!

Sherpas Cinema, the groundbreaking film team deeply rooted in authenticity and progression, present their newest film – 2 years, 5 countries and over 15 skiers in the making: All.I.Can.

The time has come for a ski film that stands for something. Join Sherpas Cinema as they unite spectacular cinematography with creative cinematic language to fuse passion for skiing with motivation for green initiatives and forward thinking. In bringing the planet to life and drawing parallels between daily existence, they find a common ground between the global situation and the real individual.

Sherpas Cinema has been an established entity in the North American ski-film industry for over 8 years now and they are set apart from the norm through their unbridled creativity, artistic flare, and motives of environmental and educational consciousness. Their film, All.I.Can., is a spectacular visual and emotional journey from the personal to the world perspective.

Broken into the three areas of focus, the Sherpas take us on a confronting, magical and inspiring path. Emphasizing the ‘ALL’ that has impacted our world in a natural and anthropogenic sense, what ‘I’ndividuals in mountain cultures have recognized to be issues and what changes we ‘CAN’ strive to implement globally and make in our everyday lives. Featured athlete JP Auclair drives home the sobering thought and environmental motivation that the film creates, stating “we feel like we need to be doing less of this and less of that. But I don’t think it’s about doing less, it’s about doing more”. These personal goals, motivations and passions for encouraging environmental awareness around the world, and especially in the winter climes that support the lifestyle of the professional athletes presented in the film, are portrayed throughout in an adrenaline-filled, inspired fashion.

INTERVIEWER: How long have your been practicing Yoga for?

JULIE: I have been practicing for 13 years, and was certified in 2004. I was 16 when a girlfriend introduced me to sun salutations.

INTERVIEWER: That is interesting because you don’t see too many people getting into yoga in high school.

JULIE: Well I went to a really groovy high school and they had elective “English & Yoga.” It was a double period so 3 days a week they would do yoga and 3 days a week they would do English and connect the two through poetry and other ways. So my friend was taking this course and she was teaching me what she was learning.

INTERVIEWER: Where did you get certified?

JULIE: I did the Forrest Yoga Training; her name is Ana Forrest in Berkeley at the Seventh Heaven Studio.

INTERVIEWER: So you grew up in Santa Monica and then moved to Berkeley?

JULIE: Well I grew up in the Bay Area until I was fourteen, then moved to LA. Meanwhile, my mother moved back to the Bay and I went to school in Boulder, CO.

INTERVIEWER: Wow, so you came from Norcal and then moved to Boulder, and now you live in Tahoe. You are definitely a hippie!

JULIE. [ laugh ] My parents were hippies. They actually got married on the Berkeley Cal Campus.

INTERVIEWER: So what is the style of yoga that you studied at Forrest Yoga Training?

JULIE: Well, Forrest Yoga teaches Power Hatha yoga. She is exceptional at using postures to eliminate toxins and emotions from your body. If you go to one of Ana’s classes, people are crying and screaming because it is a really intense emotional experience.

I sort of fell into it, I liked the “power” aspect of it and I didn’t realize the emotional aspect of it. I think that no matter how you start yoga, if it is for mental reasons, to relax, to stretch or emotional, you will get the added benefits of what you didn’t come there for. That sure happened to me.

INTERVIEWER: So why were you drawn to yoga?

JULIE: Well I definitely thought it was a spiritual journey. I thought it was about adding things to your repertoire – to become more spiritual.

Unbeknownst to me, it also has a lot to do with release. Release from the past.

So I was looking for something to have, but also getting rid of what I didn’t want anymore.

There is a great book called Molecules of Emotion. It talks about the fact that when you go through any traumatic experience – whether it is physical or not – you store that emotion in the form of pain somewhere in your body. It can be as simple as you have really tight shoulders because you are always taking on the world. As silly as that sounds, the physical, the emotional and the spiritual pain are all linked.

As a teacher we have to be able to recognize where students hold pain and what we believe to be the source of that pain.

INTERVIEWER: So you are very vocal in your classes. What do you talk about?

JULIE: In class I really focus on posture and keeping people safe – physically, emotionally and spiritually. And yoga isn’t yoga without the breath. I am constantly going back to the breath – asking them what it feels like to breathe in this posture.

INTERVIEWER: What do you enjoy about teaching yoga at High Altitude Fitness?

JULIE: For many reasons. For one, the students are really looking for a challenge. That is really fun because I can take it a step further and find what their limit is.

It is also really interesting because everyone has a sports injury that they are working with.

I have actually started calling the fitness center my “High Altitude Family” [laugh]. I just have so many friends from the gym and it is just a really nice group of people – most are active and motivated, of all ages, of all ability level. I mean sometimes it is even hard to work out because there are so many people I know there!
